Soil Survey

NRCS soil surveys provide critical information about soil characteristics and properties and their limitations and potentials. Soil surveys are intended for many different users. Learn how soil surveys can help you better understand your soil and manage your land.

Soil Surveys Can Help You

Many people assume that all soil is similar. They are unaware that significant differences in soil properties and characteristics can occur. Soil may be seasonally wet or subject to flooding. It may be shallow to bedrock. Soil surveys identify these soil properties and many others that affect land use. Soil surveys also list soil characteristics, provide soil interpretations, and show the location of each soil on detailed maps. Read more to learn how soil surveys can help you!
