On July 28, the Rhode Island Envirothon team from The Wheeler School in Providence claimed 15th place at the 2023 National Conservation Foundation (NCF) Envirothon, out of a field of 49 teams from across the U.S., Canada, and Singapore.

This year’s competition, held July 23-28, was hosted in partnership with the Envirothon New Brunswick and Science East Science Center, Mount Allison University in Tantramar, New Brunswick, Canada.

Throughout the week-long competition, students demonstrated their knowledge on soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry and wildlife management through written tests and interactive stations featuring New Brunswick’s natural resources. The teams were also tested on and then prepared oral presentations on this year’s current issue, “Adapting to a Changing Climate.”

“Teams from all over the world immersed themselves in the wonders of our natural environment and created life-long memories,” said RI Committee member Peter Stetson. The activities were carefully designed to challenge students' intellect, creativity, and teamwork skills.

Our RI Envirothon team had an excellent showing this year – they tied with the winning team in the Soils test and placed 3rd overall in the Aquatics test. They were well-supported by Mr. Mark Harris from The Wheeler School.

The 5-student Wheeler Team was the winner of the 29th annual Rhode Island Envirothon competition held May 19th at Goddard Park in Warwick, RI. About 55 high school students from six Rhode Island communities, who spent the beginning of the year studying aquatics, forestry, soils and land use, wildlife, and researching a current environmental issue in their own home communities and across the Ocean State, competed this year.

“The Envirothon is more than just a competition. Many teams have taken what they’ve learned about the environment and put it to work in their community. The program prepares the next generation for environmental stewardship,” said RI Envirothon Coordinator Paul Dolan. “Students use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to develop solutions to real-world environmental problems.”

The Massachusetts Envirothon team from Lexington won the 2023 International Envirothon, with the teams from Pennsylvania and Ontario coming in second and third, respectively. Visit the NCF-Envirothon website for the full list of winners. The 2024 NCF-Envirothon annual international competition will be held in Geneva, New York, from July 28 - August 3, where students will be tested on the topic, “Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future.”
