Wallowa Front Fuel Reduction Project

Counties: Wallowa

Primary Resource Concern: Degraded plant condition - Plant structure and composition

Project Description
RCPP - A decrease in active forest management, reduced harvest activity and wildland fire suppression have significantly altered the forest structure across the Wallowa Front.  Pre-commercial thinning, slash treatment and prescribed fire will reduce the fuel loads in the CIS area by 30 tons per acre on 6000 acres of NIPF.  The total expected outcome for the CIS area will be 180,000 tons of fuel removed.

Conservation Practices Offered

  • Woody Residue Treatment (384)
  • Prescribed Burning (338)

  2. Is the existing stand considered heavy density?
  3. Does the stand have a time sensitive forest health issue (issue: infestation of insect or disease) as determined by an Oregon Department of Forestry forester?
  4. Does the application include the use of a masticator or wood chipper to improve mineral cycling and forest soil health, and decrease insects and disease?
  5. Does the landowner have job specifications completed by an Oregon Department of Forestry forester?
  6. Has the landowner completed thinning on other parts of your property within the last 5 years? Have they had a commercial harvest in the last 10 years?
