Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Forest Stewardship
County or Counties: Jefferson, Wasco
Primary Resource Concern Addressed:
- Degraded plant condition - Plant structure and composition
- Fire management - Wildfire hazard from biomass accumulation
- Air quality emissions - Emissions of greenhouse gases
Project Description
This project aims to improve forest structure and composition and reduce the severity of wildfire across Tribal forestlands. Forested lands across the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs reservation have become overstocked with the absence of wildfire to naturally thin stands. The absence of fire has allowed minor tree and shrub species to become more dominant. Changes in vegetation composition has resulted in changes in wildlife behavior. Manipulation of the forest structure and composition will help to restore those ecological conditions that best serve wildlife and Tribes while reducing risks from wildfire.

Application Questions
NRCS uses prioritization questions to evaluate applications for this initiative. See the list of workload prioritization questions on the Oregon EQIP page. Ranking questions below will also apply.
Ranking Questions
- Will the forest stand structure and composition be manipulated with forest stand improvement (666) to achieve the objectives of the CIS?
- Will hazardous fuels be reduced with either woody residue treatment (384), fuel break (383), firebreak (560), pruning (660), brush management (314), or prescribed burning (338) practices in the conservation plan?
- Will roads be enhanced for wildfire containment by treating adjacent hazardous fuels?
- Will cultural foods resources, including huckleberries, be promoted by manipulating forest stand structure?
- Will forest lands damaged by wildfire be restored with fuels treatment or reforestation?
