April 17, 2025, was more than just a beautiful spring day it was a day of learning, laughter, and legacy as the community came together to celebrate the life and passion of Henry “Bubba” Bass during their annual Natural Resources Field Day.
Hosted by Mrs. Hortense Bass, Bubba’s loving wife, along with their devoted family, the event was created to honor Bubba’s deep appreciation for nature, education, and community. Aimed especially at 5th grade and homeschool students, the field day offered a vibrant, hands-on educational experience — and it turned out that the adults learned just as much as the kids!
The event featured nine interactive stations, including a petting zoo that quickly became a favorite for students and parents alike. Other stations explored soil health, forestry, wildlife conservation, water cycles, and sustainable farming; each designed to spark curiosity and appreciation for the natural world.
“By bringing students outdoors and putting them face-to-face with conservation professionals, NRCS continues its mission to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of our natural resources.” -Sarah Fleming, Soil Conservationist
The field day was nothing short of amazing. It was riddled with joy, laughter, and memories. Children could be seen wide-eyed and eager, petting baby goats for one minute and learning about native plants the next. Parents joined in on the fun, engaging in the learning process and reminiscing about their own childhood experiences outdoors.
Mrs. Bass shared how deeply touched she was when several students came up to her and personally thanked her for hosting the event. It was clear that the day had made a lasting impact.
“This is exactly what Bubba would have wanted,” she said with a smile. “He believed in teaching through experience and bringing people together through nature.” - Mrs. Hortense Bass
The Natural Resources Field Day wasn’t just an event; it was a heartfelt tribute to a man who lived his life connected to the land and committed to sharing its wonders with others. Thanks to the Bass family, Bubba’s legacy lives on, inspiring a new generation of nature stewards.
