The Iowa Learning Farms (ILF) conservation webinar taking place March 19, at noon CDT will feature Russ Benedict, professor of biology, Central College. Benedict has studied bats for over 35 years, mostly focusing on the general biology of species in the Midwest. He has published several articles in scientific literature on bats and has given many talks to the public and other researchers.

In the webinar, “The Bats of Iowa: Updates and Suggestions for Landowners,” Benedict will deliver an interactive presentation on bats – and bats in Iowa. He will quiz the audience about their bat knowledge while providing insights on global bat populations and the economic value of bats. Benedict will also discuss the current status of bats in Iowa, noting decreases in population and the listing of two species as endangered and another three being considered for listing.

“Bats are some of the most fascinating animals living in our state, and as bat populations continue to decline, it will have an important impact on the humans around them,” said Benedict. “Participants in this webinar will gain a better understanding of why bats matter and what each of us can do to help these charismatic animals.”

Participants are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.

Up Next: Wednesday, March 26, “An Across-the-Fence Comparison of Soil Carbon Storage on 22 Iowa Farms,” with Ellie Ellis, Colorado State University.
