The Iowa Learning Farms (ILF) conservation webinar taking place May 28, at noon CDT will feature Marissa Osterloh, graduate research assistant, Iowa State University. Osterloh focuses on modeling alternative farming practices such as prairies that bring numerous benefits both to the soil and the surrounding environment. She has a background in meteorology and climate, and conducts research centered on the interaction between crops and the surrounding environment in both present and future climates.
In the webinar, “A Modeling Approach for Quantifying the Ecosystem Services of Managed Prairie Systems,” Osterloh will provide an overview of the associated benefits of managed prairie systems on cropland and the creation of a model that can help promote implementation. She will draw on outcomes from test sites across the country to illustrate the application of the developed model. Osterloh will also discuss the potential use of the model at a commercial scale to strategically implement managed prairies on marginal cropland to maximize profit and environmental benefits for farmers.
“We know that prairies improve soil health, reduce erosion, enhance water retention, support pollinators and can boost long-term productivity and sustainability of cropland,” said Osterloh. “The model that I am discussing has been shown to accurately capture all environmental benefits of managed prairie systems on cropland which could help further adaptation and market development in the future.”
Participants are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
