Dr. Edwin Martinez Martinez, State Conservationist
The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service has a significant presence in Virginia with approximately 200 employees assisting landowners and agricultural producers at 41 field offices and the State Office in Richmond. Our state conservationist is Dr. Edwin Martinez Martinez, who assumed his position in 2020. NRCS, founded as the Soil Conservation Service in 1935, provides voluntary, cost-effective program and technical assistance to the state’s agricultural community with the goals of conserving and protecting the quality of Virginia’s soil, water and air, which in turn results in healthier produce and livestock in addition to more profitable farm operations.
