Loren Unruh, Acting State Conservationist 

Loren Unruh started his career with USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service as a student trainee in Washington state while he was finishing his Bachelor of Science degree in Range Management at Washington State University. Following the culmination of his undergraduate studies, he continued to serve in Washington — first as a Soil Conservationist, then as a District Conservationist.

Loren left Washington for its neighbor to the south, Oregon, in 1990, where he served as a District Conservationist in the Heppner Field Office. He moved to the Pendleton Field Office as a District Conservationist in 2002, before heading to the Oregon State Office in 2011 to serve as the Assistant State Conservationist for Programs. 

In January 2021, Loren took on the role of Natural Resources Specialist with the West National Technical Support Center. Throughout the years, Loren has served as a Range Specialist on a Soil Survey; received his Journeyman Planner certification; was a Basin Agronomy Lead, a Certified Crop Advisor, and an Assistant for Field Operations; and led RCPP for Oregon, among other duties and details.

Loren and his wife, Kathryn, live in Eagle Creek, Oregon. They have five grown children and seven grandchildren, and one Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. They enjoy camping, and Loren likes to think he is a fisherman and outdoorsman.
