Estimating Net Phosphorus Retention in Restored Riparian Wetlands in Vermont during Flooding

Wetlands are generally known to be phosphorus (P) sinks, however data are relatively scarce on net P retention in restored riparian wetlands on formerly farmed land during flooding. On Feb. 20, 2025, Dr. Eric Roy and Dr. Rebecca Diehl, both of the University of Vermont, will discuss new findings based on water quality monitoring studies during numerous flood events on five Vermont wetlands since 2022. Using a combination of field monitoring, soils analysis, laboratory incubations, and modeling, they estimated net P retention for various scenarios at each site. Preliminary results suggest positive net P retention, with site hydrology, soil P storage capacity, and influent river water quality being key factors in determining the balance between P capture and release. Findings will help inform wetland restoration decisions in the Northeast and beyond.
