Ecological Site Sub-Team

Sub-team of the Digital Soil Mapping Team.

The ecological site sub-team is a team focused on local, regional, and national scale ecological-focused DSM projects with a particular emphasis on development of Raster Ecological Surveys and maps of ecological properties, such as species distribution and land condition. This sub-team serves as a mechanism to provide communication, collaboration, and support for scientists developing methods and working on mapping projects using a DSM framework. Methods, issues, and solutions are discussed among the participants. The ecological site sub-team also develops and maintains National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS) standards and job aids related to the development and publication of ecological mapping products created using DSM.

Goal

Facilitate capacity building in digital soil mapping within NCSS for development of ecological mapping products through communication, collaboration, training, project support, and development of products and standards.

Objectives

  • Develop and document methods for using DSM in ecological mapping

  • Develop and update DSM standards to support creation and publication of raster ecological information products

  • Create Raster Ecological Surveys and ecological property map products

  • Collaborate with other teams to test and demonstrate the utility of raster ecological information products in conservation planning and environmental assessment
