NRCS Announces Sign-up for Connecticut Producers Transitioning to Organic: As Part of USDA’s Organic Transition Initiative

Are you an agricultural producer in Connecticut who’s interested in Transitioning to Organic? The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) can help through the multi-agency Organic Transition Initiative (OTI).

“Producers transitioning to organic can count on NRCS for assistance through the process,” said Acting NRCS State Conservationist Machelle Simmons. “Here in Connecticut, we are taking applications for FY2023 funds from our producers who are looking for financial and technical assistance to help them navigate the challenges they may experience during the transition.”

Through OTI, NRCS will hire new organic experts to support NRCS staff, host hands-on organic trainings, and assist field staff with organic-related questions.

The new organic management standard gives you the flexibility to get the assistance and education you need – such as workshops or help from experts or mentors. It supports conservation activities and practices required for organic certification and may provide foregone income reimbursement for dips in production during the transition period. You’ll be able to work with NRCS field staff, approved technical service providers, and other approved organic partners.

Eligible producers include farmers, ranchers, forest landowners, and other producers beginning or in the process of transitioning to organic certification. Higher payment rates and other options are available for underserved producers including socially disadvantaged, beginning, veteran, and limited resource farmers and ranchers. For answers to questions or to submit applications – due June 15, 2023 – contact your local USDA Service Center.
