Soil and Soil Health in California

The California Soils Program is part of the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS), an effort of Federal and State agencies, universities, tribes, and professional societies to deliver scientifically-based soil information.

California NRCS Hosts Two Soils Staffs

The State Soils Staff provides soil survey products and technical assistance to local agency and conservation district field offices as well as landowners in the state of California.

For further information, contact Tony Rolfes, State Soil Scientist, at (530) 792-5656 or
  • The Pacific Soil Survey Region 2 (SSR2) area of responsibility is based on Major Land Resource Area. The SSR2 includes parts of California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, and the Pacific Basin including Hawaii.
