The Iowa Learning Farms (ILF) conservation webinar taking place April 2, at noon CDT will feature Sylvie M. Brouder, professor and Wickersham Chair, Purdue University. Brouder conducts research on carbon and nitrogen cycling, soil sequestration, greenhouse gas emission and water quality impacts of intensively and extensively managed agriculture. She is a recognized expert on soil health and climate smart agriculture and has served as president for the American Society of Agronomy.
In the webinar, “Network Meta-Analysis Quantifies Benefits of 4R N Management,” Brouder will discuss the processes and challenges of effectively measuring the impact of 4R management on water quality. She will also share some newer analytical techniques to untangle notoriously messy water quality data and demonstrate that reducing N applications from a high rate to an economically optimum rate has significant benefits. Brouder will also highlight the importance of understanding the trade-offs that are sometimes hidden in the details of management approaches.
“With improved data collection and measurement techniques, we are finding that small changes can make measurable impacts, but to broaden adoption it is likely that some supporting policies for risk mitigation will be needed,” said Brouder. “While 4R management can have positive benefits beyond water quality, in most cases it is not being practiced if the N rate is not reduced.”
Participants are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
ILF has applied for a Certified Crop Adviser board-approved continuing education unit (CEU) for attending this webinar. Those who participate in the live webinar are eligible. Information about how to apply to receive the credit will be provided at the end of the live webinar.
