Monitoring Programs
The National Water and Climate Center administers three monitoring programs to measure weather, snowpack, and water supply:
Manual Snow Monitoring. This program consists of manually-measured snow courses and aerial markers located in high-elevation sites across the western U.S. |
Automated Snow Monitoring. The Snow Telemetry (SNOTEL) program consists of over 900 automated and semi-automated data collection sites across the western U.S. |
Automated Soil Climate Monitoring. The Soil Climate Analysis Network (SCAN) and Tribal Soil Climate Analysis Network (Tribal SCAN) are national monitoring programs for soil moisture/soil temperature data collection. |
Together, these snowpack and soil climate monitoring programs provide a nationwide network of long-term, quality-controlled water supply and climate data.
