USDA awards new partnership project in Rhode Island

USDA is investing $330 million nationwide in 85 public-private partnerships to address climate change, improve natural resources, and protect agricultural viability. A project by Rhode Island DEM has been selected for funding through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP).

Helping oyster growers and marine ecosystems in Rhode Island

In early 2020, the RI Dept. of Environmental Management and NRCS realized that the COVID-19 pandemic would have an impact on the state’s oyster growers. They saw an opportunity to help growers and the environment by obtaining mature oysters to restore dwindling oyster populations.

In Foster, Rhode Island, a patch of forest is dedicated to conservation education. The Rhode Island Forest Conservators Organization (RIFCO), maintains a demonstration woodlot where landowners can see forest management practices at work. RIFCO’s most recent project is cutting edge.

Wetlands and Forest for Wildlife Forever

When Patrick and Diane Luther purchased 38 acres of Glocester, RI woodland, they intended to develop house lots for their family. Jobs and school took their kids down other roads, so when NRCS contacted them about protecting the land with a conservation easement, they were very interested.
