National Instructions, Title 430 – Soil Survey, Part 306 Ecological Site Inventory and Ecological Site Description, dated 4/2/2015, provided guidance on a shared effort between the Soil Science and Resource Assessment (SSRA) and Science and Technology (S&T) deputy areas including NRCS staff at the local, state, and national levels. The instruction implemented a 5-year initiative, to be completed in fiscal year 2020.

Provisional Ecological Site Descriptions (PESDs) have been and will continue to be developed on grouped soil components by Major Land Resource Area (MLRA). Provisional ecological sites are first approximations based on broad groupings of soil properties (measured and predicted) and vegetation characteristics associated with those groupings. They are intended to function within the context defined by the MLRAs or refined land resource units (LRUs). The Provisional Ecological Site (PES) concept groups spatial soil units (components) and their properties that exhibit similar behavior in their production, their community dynamics, and their responses to disturbance. PES groupings are the first step in developing approved ecological site descriptions (ESDs) and eventually correlated ESDs.

The following Ecological Site Description (ESD) is an example of the newly designed ESD currently under development throughout the region. This example should be considered only as an example.
