Easements Program

Voluntary Conservation Works

NRCS offers easement programs to landowners who want to maintain or enhance their land in a way beneficial to agriculture and/or the environment. All NRCS easement programs are voluntary. We provide technical help and financial assistance, but local landowners and organizations are needed to make NRCS easement programs successful.

The NRCS New York Easement Programs include the following:

Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP) (two components)

  • Wetlands Reserve Easements (WRE) which protects, restores, and enhances wetlands. Achieving the greatest wetland functions and optimum wildlife habitat on every acre enrolled in WRE is the goal.
  • Agricultural Land Easements (ALE) protect the agricultural use and conservation values of eligible land. In the case of working farms, the program helps farmers and ranchers keep their land in agriculture. The program also protects grazing uses and related conservation values by conserving grassland, including rangeland, pastureland and shrubland.
