Watershed Rehabilitation

Since 1948, local communities in 47 states built more than 11,800 dams with NRCS assistance. The projects reduce flooding and erosion damages as well as provide water supplies, recreation, and wildlife habitat.

Many dams are near the end of their 50-year design life. They need rehabilitation to address critical public health and safety issues. The 2014 Farm Bill made about $262 million available to rehabilitate 151 dams in 26 states, including the Montpelier Dam near Montpelier, Idaho.

NRCS identified the projects based on recent rehabilitation investments and the risks to life and property if a dam failure occurred.
