Art and Rheta have been working with NRCS and rotationally grazing beef cattle on 120 acres since 2012. Through EQIP cost share assistance, they established a rotational grazing system for a herd of 35 cow/calf pairs, 30 yearling steers and 30 finishing steers. They implement 3 day moves during the winter months across 1,200 preplaced round bales. Bale grazing begins in early November and continues into the spring until all the bales are fed out sometime around mid-May. Out wintering sites are rotated yearly to manage manure effectively and stay in compliance with the farms nutrient management plan. Calves are left on the cows throughout the winter improving the quality of calves come spring.

Pasture Walk Topics include:

  • Selecting your out-wintering location
  • Out-winter setup and management
  • Bale ring use and residue management
  • Calculating forage requirements for winter feed.
    And much more!
