By committing to soil health practices such as cover crops, farmers and ranchers save time and money through reduced erosion, lower fuel costs and increased soil water and nutrients. Area producers are invited to learn more at a soil health workshop on March 29, 2017 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Eakly Community Center, downtown Eakly. Call the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) field office in Caddo County at 405-247-3303 for more information.

“Soil health is all about allowing the soil to work for you rather than constantly working the soil,” said Danielle Metz, NRCS District Conservationist for Caddo County. “Mimicking nature by keeping soil covered with living plants and minimizing soil disturbance is a cost effective way to restore crop vigor and make farm and ranch operations more resilient to weather extremes.”

Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to speak with a soil scientist and other experts, and learn about cover crops that may be right for them. A rainfall demonstrator will be used to show the water infiltration and erosion rates of tilled versus no-till versus cover crop soil.

Lunch will be provided by Helena Chemical. To RSVP or request reasonable accommodations call 405-247-3303.
