Texas is one of 25 states participating in the recently expanded USDA StrikeForce for Rural Growth and Opportunity Initiative announced on January 15, 2016 by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.

Launched in 2010, more than 1,500 StrikeForce partnerships have helped USDA support nearly 190,000 projects and invest $23.5 billion in high-poverty areas in rural America.  The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) contributed to this total with nearly 51,500 contracts for almost $1.3 billion in obligations.

This national initiative was established to address the specific challenges associated with rural poverty.   Using data from the National Census, USDA state based leadership identified specific rural areas enduring the worst chronic poverty in need of attention.  StrikeForce teams have facilitated collaboration with more than 500 community partners and public entities to bring targeted assistance to these areas.

Texas has 96 StrikeForce counties. NRCS, collaborators and partners are focusing additional outreach efforts and assistance on accelerating the delivery of NRCS’ available technical and financial assistance to farmers, ranchers and communities in these counties. NRCS technical and financial assistance efforts are already making a difference in the lives of landowners.
