Scott Mueller, NRCS, is Recipient of 2019 PEI Professional Engineer of the Year Award

Scott MuellerMadison, Wis. – August 8, 2019 – Scott Mueller, P.E., of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Wisconsin, received the PEI Professional Engineer of the Year Award at the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) International Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, in July. He was recognized for his outstanding engineering technical leadership for the NRCS and for his service to ASABE in ethics, standards and professional engineering exam development.

The ASABE is an international professional society devoted to agricultural and biological engineering. The PEI Professional Engineer of the Year Award honors a licensed engineer who has made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession, the public welfare and humankind.

Mueller is the assistant state conservation engineer with the USDA NRCS in Madison, Wisconsin. In his position, he provides engineering technical leadership statewide on hydrology, hydraulics, soil materials, geology and structural design. Mueller has made many important technical contributions to the profession of agricultural and biological engineering and he has provided guidance, oversight and engineering tools encouraging land conservation in Wisconsin.

A 33-year life member of ASABE, Mueller has been an active member within several committees of the Education, Outreach and Professional Development technical community, including the Professional Ethics Committee. As a leader of the Ethics Committee, Mueller has organized special technical sessions, interactive workshops, student video competitions and other activities to promote ethics in engineering practices. He also works to improve overall practical knowledge of ethics and strives to provide professional development opportunities for professional engineers.

Mueller is a charter member of the PEI Professional Engineers Institute, a member of the Order of the Engineer and a trustee on the ASABE Foundation Board of Trustees. His involvement with ASABE has included serving on the Historic Landmarks committee, which has worked extensively to catalog and document all existing ASABE Historic Landmarks.

In addition to his awards and societal committee involvement, he has also worked extensively with several ASABE Standards Committees and Natural Resources and Environmental Systems Committees. Mueller also sits on the Wisconsin Standards Oversight Council as one of the USDA NRCS representatives.

Throughout Mueller’s career, his passion for the NRCS mission of “Helping People Help the Land” drives his outstanding performance in getting conservation engineering practices on the landscape. His work is exemplary, and his professional attitude enables him to build key partnerships with staff and customers to further conservation work in Wisconsin.
