Colchester, VT, October 26, 2020--In response to severe flooding as a result of the 2019 Halloween Storm, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is offering the Floodplain Easement component of the Emergency Watershed Protection Program (EWPP/FPE) to residential landowners of the Town of Huntington, Vermont. Those who are interested in applying for the program will have until November 30, 2020, to submit applications. VIEW A MAP OF THE ELIGIBLE AREAS HERE.

“We are committed to the Town of Huntington and its citizens, whom have shown great resilience in the wake of this storm and storm events in previous years, by partnering with the Town to address the damage left by the 2019 Halloween Storm,” Vicky Drew, NRCS State Conservationist, said. “Together we will work to restore the floodplain to address future flooding events, enhance fish and wildlife habitat, and improve water quality.

Through the Floodplain Easement Component (FPE), eligible applicants voluntarily agree to sell a permanent conservation easement to the United States through NRCS and the remaining fee title to the Sponsor. Compensation is determined by an appraisal. These easements may occur on nonagricultural lands with residences damaged by flooding and natural disasters. NRCS and the Town of will work together to restore the easement to its natural floodplain condition.

The easement provides NRCS with the authority to fully restore and enhance the floodplain’s functions and values to natural conditions to the greatest extent practicable. NRCS may pay up to 100 percent of the restoration costs. NRCS actively restores the natural features and characteristics of the floodplain through re-creating the topographic diversity, increasing the duration of inundation and saturation, and providing for the re-establishment of native vegetation.

Those who are interested in applying for the program will have until November 30, 2020, to submit applications. Visit the NRCS national EWPP-FPE web site here or call the Town of Huntington at 802.434.4779.
