Watershed Rehabilitation Program (Rehab)

Local communities, with NRCS assistance, have constructed more than 11,800 dams in 47 states since 1948. Many of these dams are nearing the end of their 50-year design life. Rehabilitation of these dams is needed to address critical public health and safety issues in these communities. The following information provides background and case studies of rehabilitation needs of watershed dams across the nation as well as progress toward rehabilitation accomplishments.

2015 Watershed Rehabilitation Projects

NRCS is investing $19.3 million in 2015 to rehabilitate three Virginia dams to protect public health, safety, and critical infrastructure in Augusta, Rockingham, and Culpeper counties, and the towns of Bridgewater and Culpeper. This funding is part of a $73 million USDA allocation through the 2014 Farm Bill that acknowledges a critical need for rehabilitating aging dams nationwide. Projects in Virginia include:

Potomac - Upper North River Dam No. 77
(Planning - 2015; Design and Construction - 2016 - 2017)
Sponsors: Augusta County and the Headwaters Soil and Water Conservation District
Jurisdictions Impacted: Augusta County, Rockingham County and the Town of Bridgewater

Mountain Run Dam No. 11 & 50
(Planning Completed: April 2016; Design and Construction: 2016 - 2018)
Sponsor: The Town of Culpeper
Jurisdictions Impacted: Culpeper County and the Town of Culpeper

2014 Watershed Rehabilitation Projects

The 2014 Farm Bill made about $262 million available for rehabilitation of 151 dams in 26 states, including Virginia. These watershed management projects provide an estimated $2.2 billion in annual benefits in reduced flooding and erosion damages, recreation, water supplies and wildlife habitat for roughly 47 million people. Projects were identified based on recent rehabilitation investments and the risks to life and property if a dam failure occurred.

Projects in Virginia include:
