By Kanika J. Calvin-Davis, NRCS Public Affairs Specialist  ♦ June 2020

Ernest and Floretta Collins are the owners and operators of Red Hill Ranch located in Riverside, Texas. Ernest and Floretta both grew up on farms. The farm that Ernest was raised on is located in Travis County, approximately seven miles southeast of Austin, Texas. The farm, located on Dee Gabriel Collins Road, has been owned and operaed by members of the Collins family since the late 1800s and has been recognized by the state of Texas for owning and operating the farm for more than 100 consecutive years.

Ernest and Floretta attribute hard work and education as the key to their success. Having parents who instilled the importance of these attributes, along with the need to understand government programs and the importance of being involved in the community, they continue to pass down to their children and grandchildren the "keys to success" they were taught.

Ernest and Floretta met at Prairie View A&M and were married shortly after that meeting in Floretta's hometown of Bay City, Texas. Ernest and Floretta are actively involved in the community. They are both strong supporters of youth and education and have established endowed scholarship funds at both Prairie View A&M University and Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Now in retirement, Ernest and Floretta's top priorities are spending time at Red Hill Ranch with family and working with their grandchildren. With the assistance of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS), the Collins have been able to successfully maintain their operation by participating in a number of NRCS programs, such as the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP).
