2016 Northeast Regional Cooperative Soil Survey Workshop

June 20-23, 2016
Lake Placid, New York

The 2016 Northeast Cooperative Soil Survey Workshop will be held in Lake Placid, NY from June 20th to June 23rd and will include a visit to Whiteface Mountain for a technical tour examining some of the Spodic, bordering to Andic, properties of our soils in the High Peaks.

Whiteface, while not the highest of the Adirondack Mountains (Mount Marcy claims that title), is perhaps the most well-known of the 46 peaks in the Adirondacks higher than 4000 feet. It was host to all of the alpine skiing portions of the 1980 Winter Olympics. Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway was dedicated in 1929 by then Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt and opened in 1936. The mountain also houses an elevator below the summit, rumored to have been built so that FDR could reach the peak given his well-camouflaged polio disability.
