2010 Western Regional Cooperative Soil Survey Conference

In conjunction with the Western Society of Soil Science
and the Western Society of Crop Sciences

June 21-24, 2010
Las Vegas, Nevada

“Integrating 21st century soil survey with advances in plant and soil research”

Rapid changes in knowledge, techniques, and environments mean that optimal natural resource science and management requires strong links between cutting-edge advances in plant and soil research and ever-improving spatial analysis techniques in modern soil survey. Such links strengthen research by enabling landscape-scale integration of carbon and nutrient dynamics, drought-resistance, or production-improving management and biotechnology. They strengthen soil survey by highlighting key parameters to include in spatial analysis for addressing up-to-date needs for sustainable management and land use planning.

The NCSS Western Region, Western Soil Science Society, and Western Society of Crop Sciences are holding this joint conference to bring soil and crop researchers together with western soil survey leaders to strengthen links and improve both endeavors. The agenda especially features student presenters and time for interaction among researchers and soil survey scientists. We hope that it will strengthen the ability of basic and applied research to both inform and be informed by 21st century soil survey.

The Wednesday field trip will include stops at:

  1. the Nellis Dunes area of Las Vegas where the University of Nevada-Las Vegas has been cooperating with the Bureau of Land Management to investigate the response of desert soils to intensive use by off-highway vehicles;
  2. the Mormon Mesa area where recent work by NRCS and others has identified relic soils exceeding 5 million years in age; and
  3. areas within Lake Mead National Recreation Area recently mapped by the National Park Service and NRCS (time permitting; a visit also will be made to irrigated agricultural fields in the Logandale-Overton area).
