Historical International Committee Recommendations

Soil Taxonomy is the result of the collective experience and contributions of thousands of pedologists from around the world. When soil classification is inadequate in precision for the demands being made of it, international committees (ICOMs) comprised of pedologists from all over the world are called upon to improve Soil Taxonomy. These ICOMs are assigned specific tasks to improve the precision of the classification categories in order to make more quantitative and reliable interpretations for our soil surveys. The following historical ICOM circular letters and reports document the decisions used to create our current Soil Taxonomy system used today.
