National Soil Survey Handbook (NSSH)
The National Soil Survey Handbook (NSSH) provides the main operational and procedural guidance for conducting the NRCS portion of the National Cooperative Soil Survey program. The NSSH is a subdivision of the NRCS directives system. It consists of Title 430, Soil Survey, parts 600 through 659. Several part numbers are intentionally omitted to allow for expansion. The format is intended to allow flexibility for additions and updates and to provide an overall structure for all soil survey handbooks within the 600 series of the NRCS directives system.
The eDirectives system at https://directives.sc.egov.usda.gov/Default.aspx is the authoritative source for NRCS directives, including the NSSH. Some sections of the NSSH, however, are currently available online only from the links below. The Soil Science Division is in the process of transferring the entire NSSH to the eDirectives system. As sections are transferred to eDirectives, watermarked copies are retained for convenience at the links below.
Soil Science Division staff at the National Soil Survey Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, are the primary editors of the NSSH. Comments or questions on this handbook should be addressed to the National Leader for Soil Survey Standards at the National Soil Survey Center.
