2012 Rhode Island Soil Survey Planning Conference Summary



The 2012 RI Soil Survey Planning Conference was held on June 28, 2012 at the Coastal Institute's Kingston location where approximately 55 attendees learned about the latest version of the Soil Survey of Rhode Island.  In addition, attendees learned about the site specific mapping, latest research in soil science, and how to use and access soils data from a variety of sources.  The conference was sponsored by URI Cooperative Extension NEMO, and the Society of Soil Scientists of Southern New England. Jim Turenne and Maggie Payne presented on the past, present, and future of the Rhode Island Soil Survey, topics included the background information on the RI Soil Survey, how soil surveys are made, the new 2012 version, long range plans to improve soil surveys, technical soil services available, and info on accessing and using soils data. Jillian Phillips and Lorraine Joubert of the URI Cooperative Extension, NEMO highlighted RI site specific soils, hydrological soil groups, and using ArcGIS online for soil interpretive maps. Dr. Mark Stolt of URI presented information about current soil research at URI.
