Summary

This position will be supervised by the SSS and will work with programs, ecological sciences, engineering, field offices and our partners throughout our region. Some of the work may involve assessing prime farmland soils, completing NRI, provide technical soil services, helping staff with GIS issues, designing maps, and overseeing Geodata at the region/local level. This person will also be working in collaboration with the Mayagüez MLRA SSO 3-MAZ, as member of the MLRA technical team and supporting projects such as the coastal zone soil survey, map unit evaluations, assessment of soil salinity of the Lajas Valley Agricultural Reserve, supporting the soil and climate analysis network, and soil survey interpretations. 

Responsibilities

As a Student Trainee (Administration), you will be performing the following duties under direct supervision. Assignments will be developmental in nature and will assist the employee in gaining the competencies necessary for a career:

  • Conducts on-site soil investigations.
  • Provides on-site technical assistance to agency personnel and the public on the interpretation and application of soil survey information related to specific soil, water, air, plant, and animal resource concerns.
  • Plans, develops and provides training in soil science and the use of soil survey information to NRCS and non-NRCS audiences. Training includes principles of soil science and the appropriate use of soil survey information.
