Corvallis PMC Joins Fight Against Hunger

Corvallis PMC staff members Amy Bartow and Tyler Ross assist with the sweet corn harvest for donation to a local food bank.

By Annie Young-Mathews, Conservation Agronomist

The USDA-NRCS Corvallis Plant Materials Center (PMC) located in Corvallis, Oregon donated over a ton of sweet corn to low-income members of our community last summer as part of the national Feds Feed Families campaign and the USDA People’s Garden project. The sweet corn was grown as part of an on-going study at the PMC farm looking at the effects of mixed-species cover crops on soil health. The bi-color ‘Luscious’ sweet corn was harvested in early September, and we were able to donate a total of 735 pounds to Linn Benton Food Share and 495 pounds to the Mary’s River Gleaners.

The Linn Benton Food Share has been feeding Linn and Benton counties for over 30 years by working to efficiently move food to those in need through a network of local partner agencies—emergency shelters and food pantries, soup kitchens, child and senior care centers, shelter homes, and gleaning groups. With the vision that “Everybody Eats,” Linn Benton Food Share supports the goals of the Oregon Food Bank Network to eliminate hunger and its root causes in our region.

The Mary’s River Gleaners is a group of able-bodied volunteers with low incomes who gather crops, surplus or salvage foods and firewood to share fifty/fifty with adoptees. Adoptees are elderly and/or disabled individuals who have low incomes.

Corvallis PMC staff had a fun day picking corn, and we were glad to see the produce going to a good home. We look forward to an even bigger harvest and donation next year as our soils continue to improve!
