Honolulu, HI The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Pacific Island Area (PIA) has made available, though Cooperative Agreements, $900,000 in technical assistance grants to Hawaii Soil and Water Conservation Districts.  The grants will help NRCS implement Farm Bill Programs through the development of high quality conservation plans and timely certification of completed conservation practices.

“These funds will increase the technical capacity of the Soil and Water Conservation Districts and allow us to deliver more quality conservation products to agricultural producer in the Pacific Islands,” said Travis Thomason, NRCS PIA Director.

Funds provided by NRCS emanate from conservation technical assistance, Environmental Quality Incentives Program, and Conservation Stewardship program funds.  In support of the cooperative relationship, the recipient Soil and Water Conservation Districts are providing additional matching funds.  Recipients include: Kona SWCD; West Maui, Central Maui, Olinda-Kula and Hana SWCDs; Kau, Puna, and Waiakea SWCD, and East and West Kauai SWCDs.

Partnering with other conservation organizations through agreements is one way NRCS PIA is expanding their conservation efforts across the islands.  To learn more about NRCS PIA visit our website at (https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/site/pia/home/) or your local NRCS Field Office.
