Honolulu, Hawaii August 28, 2019 – NRCS PIA Names Maui District Conservationist

Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Pacific Islands Area Director, Travis Thomason,  announces the selection of Jill Ficke-Beaton to serve as District Conservationist for the NRCS Kahului Field Office. In her role, Ficke-Beaton will provide leadership for NRCS’ Maui Team and its mission to support Maui’s farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners in their voluntary conservation efforts.

“Jill is a skilled and committed conservationist,” Thomason said. “The knowledge and experience she brings to Maui will greatly benefit the farming and ranching communities with conservation solutions that enhance the environment while maintaining commercial viability.”

Ficke-Beaton grew up on Maui.  She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Hawaii at Hilo, a Master degree in Natural Resource Management with an emphasis on Rangeland Ecology and Certificate in Water Resource Management from Colorado State University, and is a certified Professional Rangeland Manager.  She currently serves as the Hawaii Cattlemen’s Association Secretary/Treasurer, and is a member of the Society of Range Management and Hawaii Sheep and Goat Association. Ficke-Beaton’s work in conservation started first as a customer of NRCS for her small cattle, sheep, and orchid operation, and then as an Earth Team volunteer, Soil and Water Conservation District planner, and NRCS Soil Conservationist and Range Management Specialist.

“I am excited to be part of the solutions that the Kahului Field Office Team can come up with to help conserve the Valley Isle’s natural resources,” Ficke-Beaton said. “Living on the Big Island for the past 35 years, I have only been a distant observer during the transitions that Maui has gone through. I look forward to the chance to assist Maui’s producers with their conservation practices.”

NRCS, through voluntary natural resource conservation programs, works side-by-side with producers, local conservation districts, and other partners to protect and conserve natural resources and build sustainable farming solutions through soil conservation on private lands throughout the United States.
