Kristen Cornelius,  Helping the Community

Albuquerque, N.M. – Kristen took the initiative and played a vital role to help the community after a devastating flood hit the San Antonio, NM area.  She assisted in visiting this area and assessing damage/conservation needs.  With this information, Kristen presented on behalf of Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) at two USDA (NRCS/FSA) meetings with the public.  She followed up by contacting producers to gauge their interest in NRCS assistance to determine the funding needed to address the conservation needs from the flood.

Kristen devoted a considerable amount of extra time and effort beyond her normal workload as a GS-6 Soil Conservation Technician.  She demonstrated considerable leadership representing the agency at the USDA meetings and in working with the local producers. This kind of effort and responsibility goes way beyond the normal scope of a Soil Conservation Technician job description.

As a result of Kristen's efforts, New Mexico NRCS applied for emergency EQIP funding to address the conservation needs from this catastrophic flooding event.  Kristen provided much needed outreach not only for potential emergency programs but our regular programs as well.  NRCS was able to apply additional conservation/dollars to achieve its goals.  The positive effects of her efforts helping this community in their time of need will yield very positive results well into the future.

Kristen will receive an award for her achievement and recognition.
