Keith White,  Seed Cleaning Equipment and Processes

Albuquerque, N.M. – Keith assisted the Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE) with establishing their new seed cleaning facility in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  IAE collects native seed and works with small farmers to increase seed production for localized conservation projects, the Santa Fe facility is new and IAE staff volunteers were unfamiliar with seed cleaning equipment and processes.  Keith explained how to set up and calibrate each piece of equipment, how to properly operate the equipment, and was mindful to teach participants important safety considerations.

Keith regularly cleans seeds at the Los Lunas Plant Materials Center, it is beyond the scope of his normal duties to teach seed cleaning to NGOs at an offsite location.  This was a day-long event, and Keith devoted a few hours of his personal time to ensure the training was thorough and well received.

Los Lunas PMC does not have the capacity to focus on "niche" releases for targeted restoration projects on a local level.  IAE focuses on these "niche" projects by working with small farmers who are often Historically Underserved or beginning farmers. Keith's contribution will help to get more conservation on the ground and strengthen the partnership between NRCS and IAE.

Keith will receive an award for his achievement and recognition.
