Public meeting on Assunpink Creek Dam No. 8 rehabilitation set for August 12th

Assunpink Creek Dam No. 8 rehabilitation set for August 12th.SOMERSET, N.J., July 15, 2020 -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Hamilton Township, Mercer County,Monmouth County, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Mercer County Soil Conservation District, and the Freehold Soil Conservation District are co-sponsoring a public meeting at 6:00 p.m. on August 12, 2020, to discuss the proposed dam rehabilitation project in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. The dam is known locally as the Robert G. Martin Lake.


This public meeting will be held virtually using Microsoft Teams. Detailed meeting information (link and call-in phone number) and an Assunpink PowerPoint will be provided on the Hamilton Township website at, one week prior to the meeting.


Staff from these agencies, along with their consultants, will provide information on the dam rehabilitation program, planning activities to date, the various rehabilitation alternatives evaluated, and the recommended alternative for rehabilitation of this flood-retarding structure. They will be available to answer questions and concerns about the project and seek public input. Please plan to participate.


Assunpink Creek Dam No. 8 provides flood protection to residents of Hamilton Township, Mercer County, and the adjacent downstream floodplain. Local sponsors, NRCS staff, and their consultants are developing a plan for rehabilitating Site 8 so it meets current dam safety regulations and design standards. Alternatives being considered include: no action, decommissioning (dam removal), structural rehabilitation, and nonstructural measures.


Federal funding has been received to assist the local sponsors in developing the plan, but has not yet been secured for the design or construction of this project.
