NASIS: Advanced Report Writing (000185)


This training will provide soil scientists with the skills needed to perform complex data manipulations and formatting required to create specialized reports.


Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain cross tabulation, regroup, and other forms of aggregation;
  • Explain the BASE TABLE concept and behavior of multiple EXEC SQLs;
  • Explain the use and behavior of aliases and OUTER joins;
  • Explain parametric queries and the use of variables;
  • Describe the effect of data manipulations on the database view;
  • Describe report iteration processing and explain conditional sections;
  • Describe the use of sub reports and temporary tables;
  • Explain constructs used in mathematical operations and other data transformations;
  • Recognize sources of error in report scripts; and
  • Plan effective strategies for writing reports.


Prerequisites and Recommendation

Basic NASIS and Basic Report Writing, plus extensive experience writing reports.


3 days.


Any National Cooperative Soil Survey partner with extensive report writing experience.

Equipment and Materials

  • NASIS Report Writing Technical Reference.
  • NASIS Data Structure Diagrams.
  • NASIS Database Structure Guide.
  • NASIS Table Structure Report.
  • A X-Terminal or equivalent emulator (Hummingbird) which is connected to a NASIS system and capable of running NASIS.
  • A login on the NASIS computer, and in NASIS itself
