Back to school with NRCS

Just in time for the new school year, NRCS unveiled its new Teachers and Students webpage, home to age-appropriate scholastic resources. These tools are designed to help students learn about soil, water, air, plants and animals and what we can all do to protect those resources.

The webpage’s components include:

S.K. Worm shares his scientific knowledge on the significance of soil on his guided interactive soil tour. Other NRCS characters, like Major Mulcher and Not-Till Bill, take students through activities that teach the basics of clean water and how it can be used wisely in a free packet called Your Hometown Clean Water Tour.

For the Good of the People helps student learn where their food comes from, how it is produced and what they can do to conserve resources now and in the future. This 32-page booklet is written for a fifth grade audience and can be downloaded for free here.

  The Wonder of Discovery – Pollinators All around   NRCS’ newest pollinator poster, which features children and animals in a variety of environments. Kids can take time to discover all the bees, hummingbirds, bats, butterflies and more, showing why protection pollinators is important. A new one is produced annually each year. All are available free at NRCS’ Distribution Center.

Educational resources are compiled for students of all ages. Teachers can also download lesson plans, posters and informational publications about natural resources and the history of land use and conservation.

Backyard Conservation lesson plans have been grouped for sets of grades from elementary through high school and offer hands-on studies that promote field investigation and action. The collection of NRCS resources, and comprehensive listings of science websites, provides teachers standardized information created from sound scientific research in the field of environmental conservation.
