  • 2021 National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS) National Conference - June 8-10, 2021

  • Prime Farmland Map Unit Update - 2020
    • In 2020, Massachusetts NRCS revisited and revised the farmland criteria for soils in the state. These changes resulted in changes to Farmland Class of some soil map units. Get the details here.
  • Soil Data Refresh -  October 2020
    • Soil scientists with the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS) are continually updating and improving the soil survey data. These improvements are published as a soil survey data refresh made publicly available on an annual basis.
    • The most up-to-date soil survey data is available through Web Soil Survey.

    • In 2020, updates to the soil survey data for Massachusetts included:

      • New mapping of subaqueous or underwater soils in two coastal ponds on Martha’s Vineyard.
      • Updates to the Farmland Classification Ratings.
      • Improvements to the data for Plymouth and Whitman soils.
  • Coastal Zone Soil Survey Work Planning Conference - January 2018 - Savannah, GA
    • The Coastal Zone Soil Survey is an effort to update and map the soils along the coast and beneath shallow water.  A work planning conference is being held in Georgia to plan soil survey priorities in the coastal zone.
