Hotline for Reporting Lost/Stolen Government Provided IT Equipment or Media
Effective Monday, May 7, 2007, a toll-free hotline number for reporting lost or stolen government-issued information technology equipment such as laptop computers, personal data assistants, cell phones and removable storage media is available to all employees, contractors and business partners.
What type of incidents to report?
Any type of lost/stolen equipment or paper-based data
computers (laptop or desktop)
copiers
Blackberry, PDA and cell phones
removable storage media (thumb/jump drives)
paper-based data that contains personally identifiable information.
Immediately call the USDA Security Hotline at 1-888-926-2373.
When calling, be prepared to answer questions regarding the loss or theft including:
who, what, when and where
your computer's name, make and model number plus the serial number. Make sure to note this information ahead of time and keep it someplace secure and separate from your computer!
was the device encrypted?
what type of information was stored on the equipment, and
was the PPI/sensitive data involved? If so, call NRCS Security Incident Response Team's 24 hour hotline at 202-657-8111.
