USDA Sponsoring Healthy Soils Workshop

Poster for Healthy Soils Event, August 9, 2018

USDA is one of several sponsors of the upcoming Healthy Soils = Profitable Soils Workshop scheduled for August 9, 2018. Others include the Connecticut RC&D, Oakridge Farm, and Farm Credit East.

The session will address topics such as how to . . .

  • boost the energy of your haylage
  • reduce weather risk for hay crop silage
  • make money on both ends of the season
  • yield results from field trials
  • optimize nitrogen

Keynote speaker will be Tom Kilcer, a practical and well respected agronomist from New York, who will discuss diversifying crops that can meet or exceed feed quality of silage corn, optimizing grass harvest for highest gain, benefits of optimizing cover crop growth, benefits of cutting cover crops for forage, and dialing in nitrogen applications to maximize yield but reduce production costs.

The event is being held at Oakridge Dairy, the largest dairy farm in the state. The owners have not only agreed to host, they are also opening up their new facilities for tours and to describe the feed area.
