SNOTEL Site:  Upper Nome Creek

Location: 65° 22' 2” N, 146° 35' 32"W

Elevation: 768 meters

Landform: high flood plain

Slope: 2 percent

Aspect:  southwest

Vegetation: willow/herbaceous scrub

Statewide Soil Map Unit (STATSGO): E31FP1- Interior Alaska Highlands-Boreal Lowlands-Flood Plains and Terraces.  Also included in the distribution is E31MV1

 

US Soil Taxonomy:  coarse-loamy over sandy or sandy-skeletal, mixed, superactive , acid Typic  Cryofluvents

Parent Material: thin organic mat over stratified loamy alluvium over sandy and gravelly alluvium derived from schist.

General Soil Profile Description:

  Oe/C-0 to 5 cm; black fibrous highly organic moderately decomposed material and brown silt loam; pH 5.5

  A/Oa- 5 to 22 cm;  dark brown silt loam and black highly organic highly decomposed organic material;   pH 5.2

  C1-22 tp 52 cm;  yellowish brown  stratified sand through silt; pH  5.4

   2C1 and 2C2-52 to 152 cm; dark yellowish brown extremely gravelly coarse sand and extremely cobbly sand; pH  5.3

Notable Features:  Occasionally flooded soil with bright colors imparted by the schist parent material

Domain:  Soil temperature and moisture data are representative of well drained, occasionally flooded soils on  flood plains. Vegetation is dominated by willow/herbaceous scrub.
