The Iowa Learning Farms (ILF) conservation webinar taking place July 24 at noon CDT will feature Justin Glisan, Ph.D., State Climatologist of Iowa, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. As State Climatologist of Iowa, Glisan’s responsibilities include quality control of Iowa weather observations, as well as delivering weekly recommendations to the U.S. Drought Monitor, and weekly and monthly climate summaries for state stakeholders. Looking at how trends in precipitation and temperature are changing and applying this climatological analysis through the lens of agriculture is also a very important part of his responsibilities. He also advises the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture on climatological matters.

In the webinar, “Conservation Practices through the Lens of Weather Extremes and Climate Adaptation,” Glisan will discuss weather and climate trends across Iowa and how conservation practices can help to mitigate adverse impacts of these trends on agriculture. He will also cover the widespread impacts from extreme weather events and how farmers and agricultural stakeholders may be best prepared to mitigate risks.

“Through understanding our changing climate, farmers can be better prepared to grasp the particular set of issues they face from extreme weather events and ongoing trends, and how conservation practices can be put into use to mitigate impacts from these conditions,” said Glisan. “Participants in this webinar will learn about the climatological trends and weather impacts that affect agriculture as well as gain a better understanding of how climate system changes and conservation practices can be linked to improve outcomes.”

Participants are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
