Family Conserves Working Ag Land Near Glen

Publish Date

In December 2020, Kalsta Ranch Company completed a conservation easement with The Montana Land Reliance (MLR) on 1,000 acres of the family’s ranch just outside of Glen, Montana.

Story courtesy of The Montana Land Reliance.

The easement permanently protects valuable agricultural and scenic views. The property is highly visible to the general public driving U.S. Interstate 15 and Montana State Highway 91, both public roadways that traverse portions of the property. The property is also highly visible to the recreating public from the Big Hole River on which the property has more than two miles of river frontage. The property borders State of Montana, U.S. Department of Interior (BLM), and Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks land. The easement is directly adjacent to another MLR-protected property and the easement on Kalsta Ranch Company provides important habitat for a variety of wildlife, and contributes to the rural, agricultural and natural scenic qualities of the area.

The easement terms will limit the extent of residential and commercial building on the property to protect the traditional rural, agricultural, and natural character of the land while providing opportunities to continue traditional farming and ranching practices.

MLR is honored by the Kalsta family’s decision to conserve their land, and grateful for the support of the Natural Resources Conservation Service through the Agricultural Land Easement program and private donors who made the conservation easement possible.
