What is the Migratory Bird Resurgence Initiative (MBRI)?

The Migratory Bird Resurgence Initiative (MBRI), aims to preserve, protect, and improve habitat for migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, neotropical birds, and other avian species in the Prairie Pothole Region and in key portions of the Pacific, Mississippi, and Central Flyways. 


Habitat Management Through NRCS

NRCS California has received $500,000 in funding to provide technical and financial assistance toward the protection and improvement of habitats for migratory species traveling along California's Pacific Flyway. 

MBRI utilizes the practice, 646 - Shallow Water Development and Management. This practice may be scheduled up to five times per land unit, once per year. California will also be offering the following practices:

  • 327 - Conservation Cover
  • 386 - Field Border
  • 420 - Wildlife Habitat Planning
  • 644 - Wetland Wildlife Habitat Management
  • 645 - Upland Wildlife Habitat Management
  • 649 - Structures for Wildlife 

Higher payment rates and other options are available for underserved producers including socially disadvantaged, beginning, veteran, and limited resource farmers and ranchers.    

Applications for MBRI will be processed using ACT NOW. Eligible applications will be obligated within 42 business days of receipt. The established ranking threshold for MBRI is 70.
