Location: Big Dig in Knowles, Dodge County
Farmers are invited to a field day at the David Rinzel Family farm on Wednesday, October 7 from 11am-2:30pm. Located just east of Knowles at W2254 County Road Y, Rinzel will discuss his experiences of frost seeding red clover into winter wheat as a nitrogen source.
Farmers will be able to view several field plots highlighting different species of covers. A soil pit will be dug to investigate rooting effects below the surface. Natural Resources Conservation Service will demonstrate how improving soil quality leads to higher crop yields while buffering weather extremes.
Mike Patin, NRCS DC, explains considering cover crops to stimulate soil biology, improve soil quality, and break compaction. Anyone considering planting cover crops or improving soil for higher yields should plan on attending.
Lunch will be provided by Jacobson Farmers Supply and Heritage Seed. Please RSVP to Jacobson’s (920) 583-3116 by October 5 for lunch.
