The UVI Cooperative Extension Service (UVI-CES) will launch World Food Day activities October 16 with a Hunger Banquet from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the UVI Great Hall in St. Croix. Local 5th-8th graders, VI Department of Education representatives and community leaders are invited to experience the challenges of poverty and world hunger first-hand.
The celebration continues from 12:00 - 6:00 p.m. on October 18. Fair attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the food drive.
World Food Day is officially celebrated on Oct. 16, but is observed worldwide throughout October. It is intended to bring attention to the plight of the hungry and undernourished around the world. This year’s theme is "Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle of Rural Poverty."
World Food Day is sponsored by UVI-CES, the UVI Agricultural Experiment Station and the V.I. Department of Agriculture.

Attendees will learn from experts on how to reduce the use of pesticides, and how to use sustainable solutions for pest control. It will also cover the health issues associated with applying pesticides. Register as soon as possible to take advantage of this learning opportunity.
