People's Garden Corliss Institute

NRCS Rhode Island Takes Part in the USDA People's Garden Initiative This Year by Adding Two Gardens - URI Peckham Farm and Corliss Institute

The national initiative promotes the collaboration of gardens integrated within the community and includes practices to benefit the environment.  Both gardens provide education on low maintenance gardening.

If You Own or Manage Farmland or Forest Land in Rhode Island, We Can Help You Protect, Restore, and Enhance Your Land

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides conservation planning and financial and technical assistance to help you composting animal and plant waste, preventing soil erosion, protecting crop fields, enhancing woodlands, controlling invasive plant species, reducing irrigation water use, and improving water quality along among other resource concerns.  Funds are available through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).  Although applications are accepted on a continuous basis throughout the year, the third round application deadline for the 2012 fiscal year is June 1, 2012!

New 2012 Soil Survey Data: RI NRCS Completes the First Freshwater Subaqueous Soil Survey!

A new version of the Soil Survey of Rhode Island is now available for download on the Soil Data Mart and for viewing and creating interpretive maps/reports on the Web Soil Survey.  The new version features many improvements, new soil map units, fixes to errors, a re-digitizing of Block Island, completion of Phase II of the RI Coastal Zone Soil Survey, and the first ever examples of a freshwater subaqueous soil survey.

Dr. Homer Wilkes, NRCS Acting Associate Chief, Visits Rhode Island to Represent NRCS at U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse's Rhode Island Energy and Environmental Leaders Day

Dr. Homer Wilkes, NRCS Acting Associate Chief, visited Rhode Island on May 1, 2012 to represent NRCS at the Rhode Island Energy and Environmental Leaders Day which was held at the University of Rhode Island's Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences Building where well over 150 attendees from the public and private sectors convened to discuss the importance of the health and protection of our oceans, rivers, and drinking water.  Dr. Wilkes was one of four distinguished panelists who addressed "Watershed Management: Protecting the Ocean State's Waterways".
